The course is 5.5km, and there is a 3km course for primary school students. It takes approximately 30 minutes for racing canoes to finish and 60 minutes for recreational canoes. Spectators always enjoy watching the long procession of canoes pass by.
This event has its origins in a local race in which canoeists vied to be the first to return to Matsudo after visiting the temple Taishakuten in Shibamata for hatsumode, the first visit of the New Year on the third of January.
Since 2004, we have been using IC tags to time each canoe, an initiative that has been well received by participants. A particular treat on the day is the tonjiru (pork and vegetable miso soup) that is served at lunch time.
